1st Birthday Party Ideas to create a lifetime of memories
1st birthday party ideas are a fun challenge. Thinking that this date marks the first year of your little one’s life is something that will fill any parent’s heart with joy and excitement. We know the planning process can be difficult – after all, you have an infant at home to take care of while you’re planning. But we’ve come up with some simple 1st birthday party ideas and checklist items that might help to make the planning process more fun and less stressful.
Things to keep in mind
- The party is for the grown-ups. Let’s just call it like it really is. A 1st birthday party is just an excuse for us grown-ups to get together and have some fun, right?! Obviously, the guest of honor must be the center of attention, but at this young age, chances are slim that the little one will remember much. Make sure you plan the party around the reality that most of your guests will be grown adults!
- Everyone will eat a different amount of food with a wide range of food preferences. Because there is a wide range of ages represented at most 1st birthday parties, the type of food and drink you serve will be more varied. Be sure to prepare for adult drinks just as much as kiddie drinks (and be sure to keep them separate!). No need to go overboard on either (beer and wine for parents and juice and milk for kids is probably enough), but having something for everyone will make everyone feel catered to. Trust me this is one of those 1st birthday party ideas that most people overlook.
- Everyone will have a digital camera. Celebrations for small children guarantee one reaction from almost every father: Bring the Camera. Chances are – these days – that the camera will also be digital. Take advantage of both of these trends by setting up a Flickr page (or some other photo sharing site) for your guests to upload their images after the party. This is an easy 1st birthday party idea to create memories and a photo book to last a lifetime.
- Gift giving. This is a tricky one, so be clear to your guests whether you are expecting or not expecting gifts. Most guests automatically assume that gifts are going to be handed out. And in fact the way you communicate this message is to explicitly state that you do NOT want gifts to be given. If you do not tell people to leave the gift giving alone this year, then you should expect most of your guests to bring a gift for your little one. Unlike baby showers, the 1st birthday party does not have a registry. Expect there to be some duplicate gifts and prepare for having to do the returns (or regifting!) later.
In addition to the things to keep in mind, we also have some basic planning advice to help implement some of these great 1st birthday party ideas.
- Plan a cake option. These days many parents have become much more picky and conscientious about what their kids eat. Some kids also have bad reactions to the high content of sugar in cakes. For that reason, it’s a good 1st birthday party idea to have an option to the birthday cake. Look for birthday cake recipes that substitute Splenda for sugar, and make sure to include fruit and veggies in the overall menu, so the kids don’t fill up entirely on junk food. Your guests will thank you!
- Keep the food simple. Sorry, but one year olds don’t enjoy eating duck confit or shrimp. Simple rules the day as it relates to the menu. The best 1st birthday party ideas are usually the simple ones, and this definitely applies to the food. Think: burgers, hot dogs, corndogs, mixed veggies, juice, and tater tots. This will make the event feel special for the kids. It’s easy and cheap, and will keep all the tiny mouths full!
- Baby proof your house. Since babies all develop at different speeds there’s a chance that even though your one-year old might not be walking yet, doesn’t mean that some of the others won’t be. Be sure to protect the little ones from walking into anything hazardous.
- Get help and assign tasks. Believe it or not, most guests like to help out and participate in the party throwing! Don’t be shy to assign tasks, such as filling the ice bucket or changing the CDs on the stereo to your guests. Most adults are used to the stress about throwing a party so they will be more than happy to help.
- Have a theme. We usually recommend this idea for adult birthday parties, but it also makes a good 1st birthday party idea as well. There are plenty of fun theme ideas you can incorporate into your 1st birthday party, such as princess or prince, their favorite animal (duck, monkey, teddy bear), or even their favorite book (Curious George, ABC book). Sometimes having a general theme to your event helps to make the 1st birthday party ideas really start to blossom!
