16th Birthday Party Ideas...How sweet it is to be Sixteen!
16th Birthday party ideas can run the gamut. Whether you hope the MTV film crew stops by for an impromptu taping of “My Super Sweet 16” or whether you’d be happy with a sleep over at home with your closest friends, there is a wide spectrum of 16th birthday party ideas for you to choose from.
Some sweet sixteen party ideas, however, are timeless and classic no matter who you are. The one idea we hear most often is the freedom that the 16th birthday party symbolizes since it’s the first time most of us are allowed to drive! How exciting is that?! Is there a better reason – EVER – to throw a party?
All that being said, the best parties are the ones that are the best organized. You need to keep in mind that those parties you see on MTV are televised for a reason – because they’re completely RIDICULOUS! Unless your parents (or you) are a gazillionaire, don’t try to copy what you see on TV. You’ll only end up frustrated and broke. Instead, make your 16th birthday party ideas your own!
Follow these basic steps to get your 16th birthday party off on the right foot!
Step 1: Pick a theme.
16th birthday party ideas all starts with a great theme for your friends to love. Your theme should be specific and conjure up an idea right away in people’s heads.
Usually, themes start with your personal interests or something that you and your friends always find yourselves talking about. During this phase of the planning process, you are just “brainstorming.” Don’t limit yourself as to what kind of theme you want for your party. Ignite your creativity and use your imagination.
A great theme can come from anywhere, like your favorite movie, TV show, magazine article, or even a vacation you took with your family! Some great 16th birthday party ideas we’ve seen before include:
- Tropical vacation (especially fun in the winter time!)
- Favorite sport
- Dress like a character from your favorite movie
- Baby, you can drive my car!
- Winter wonderland
- Greek Islands
- Fun costumes
- White party (everyone wears all white!)
Whichever theme you decide on, just make sure your 16th birthday party idea is one that your guests understand, so that when the party starts, no one feels like they didn’t “get” it.
Step 2: Set a budget.
This step is perhaps the hardest, but also the most important. Money – as your parents have likely told you time and time again – does NOT grow on trees. You must think about how much all of this will cost, and then you must STICK TO IT no matter what! Write down exactly how much you are able to spend on your 16th birthday party ideas. That’s the first step in creating a budget.
The next step is to write down a list of all the things you want for your party. This includes things like: food, drinks, music (DJ?), party favors, invitations, and cake. Create that list of EVERYTHING, and write down how much you think each of these items is going to cost. Add it all up, and what do you get? Is that number bigger than the one you got in step one? Then, you need to start removing items or plan to spend less on each item. Since these are all just estimates at this point, the next step is to call vendors or go to the store and write down how much the items really cost. Then you’ll know exactly whether or not your budget is a real one that will work for your party.
Step 3: Determine your invite list.
Once you’ve determined your budget, you can now decide who you want to invite. As you probably already know, this can be a tricky step and can turn all those wonderful 16th birthday party ideas into a nightmare if you don’t do it the right way.
Our advice: Let your budget be your guide to bring your 16th birthday party ideas to life. Invite as many people as you can afford to have given your budget. You can either provide each guest with a great experience where everyone feels like they’re party of a fairy tale event, or you can invite a LOT more people and spend less per person. It’s a tradeoff. But whichever way you lean, just keep in mind that it’s who attends that makes a party great! Make sure you invite a nice mix of friends and use this as an opportunity to introduce people to one another who might not normally hang out outside of school.
Step 4: Order your supplies.
Now that you know who you’re inviting and how much you can spend, now it’s time to order any party supplies you think you’ll need. For 16th birthday parties this usually includes: invitations, party favors, a cake, food, and decorations for the event space. Since you now know your budget and your theme, this step should be easy (and fun!).
Just keep in mind that if there’s something you want, but you can’t afford it, don’t give up! We recommend that when you can’t find items in your price range, that you do your best to make them yourselves. In areas like food and cake, you can save a lot of money by making these items yourself.
Step 5: Book any services or event spaces.
If you’re not having your party at home, and think it’s a great idea to book a separate event space for your 16th birthday party, keep in mind that this will cost you a LOT more money. Similarly, if you want to hire a band or a DJ, now is the time to do it!
Book your event space or your event services, and the key here is to be SPECIFIC about what you want. Don’t just say vague, general things like: “I want everyone to have a great time and I want a cool vibe.” That doesn’t help a DJ or event planner. You need to provide specifics. Bring photos if possible. Provide as many examples as possible. And remember that you are paying a lot for these services and the providers want to make sure you’re going to be happy. This usually happens when the service provider and client (ahem…that’s YOU!) are in good communication with one another.
Step 6: Prepare for the event.
After all that preparation and coming up with the perfect 16th birthday party ideas, it’s time to get ready for your event. Remember that all the attention (and eyeballs) will be on you for most of the evening! As you pick out something to wear and start your “style regimen” it’s important that you also keep these two rules in mind: 1) Do your best to ensure that EVERYONE has a good time (even those guests who your mom forced you to invite!) and 2) Be GRATEFUL for this evening. You will only be Sweet Sixteen once and these are all the people in your life who are important to you and are excited to participate in your celebration. That’s the greatest idea of all, right?!
